Building2Think

The aim of the Building2Think project was to foster and develop creativity and thinking abilities. The teaching methodology for the programme was based on a combination of 10% theory and 90% doing. The children were organised into small teams and set a problem, in our case, to create an area within Lusk for children.

Building2Think ran the programme for a duration of four consecutive days from 16th to 19th May from 2.00pm to 4.30pm each day. The 26 children were chosen based on standardised test results and ranged from 3rd to 5th class. They were broken into five groups of mixed class levels. Our five groups ‘Smartical Barticals’, ‘Tropic Thunder’, ‘Majestical Unicorns’, ‘Tigers’ and ‘VCLSM’ worked extremely hard on the project. The children really enjoyed themselves and their enthusiasm for the project, even late into the day, was contagious. Among some of the ideas presented included a library with a paintball shooting maze and a laser tag zone. The children presented their project at assembly and again to their parents with a very special guest in attendance, Mayor of Fingal Councillor Ken Farrell.

Ms. Jordan, the coordinating teacher, would like to take this opportunity to thank the Building2Think team and the 26 children who made the project such a success. It was a tough week for the children and the amount of work they put into the project has to be commended. Well done to everyone involved!

Some thoughts from the children involved:

“The project was good because there were lots of challenges and you had to work together.” Amy Clarke, 3rd Class

“I liked the project because it inspired me to show my creative side. I also got to meet the Mayor of Fingal County Council. It was a great privilege.” Jennifer Darkwah, 4th Class

“My favourite thing was building the models and making new friends with children from other classes.” Ciara Cunningham, 4th Class

“I had so much fun I would even do it on a Saturday.” Luke Reade, 5th Class

“I enjoyed it because you had to use your imagination and build stuff. I had lots of friends there and I liked the way we didn’t get bossed around.” Jonathan Niall, 5th Class

“I enjoyed making the models and explaining them to our school. I also enjoyed working in a group with children from other classes. We got to be as creative as we wanted and it was great fun.” Rebecca Daly, 5th Class

“The best part was building new things and making new friends.” Luke Bofin, 3rd Class

“I liked the way that we weren’t really told what to do and that they made the learning fun. The building part was good fun because it was our own ideas that we were making a reality.” Karl Murphy, 5th Class

“My favourite thing about the project was the way we got to all say our own ideas no matter how wacky they were.” Josh Corcoran, 3rd Class

“My favourite part of the project was building the prototype and helping the other members of our team. We saw the video of the advanced shopping trolley and that was amazing.” Matthew Hennigan, 3rd Class
