| Lusk National School Green School Committee 2010/11 | ||
|---|---|---|
|
Lusk National School is a fully recognised Green School. We were awarded our first Green Flag in May 2006 for work in recycling and litter awareness. We were awarded our second Green Flag for work in awareness and conservation of energy. |
|
| The next flag we are aiming for is for work in raising awareness of water conservation. We have a very hard working committee who, along with the whole school community help to make our school a greener and more environmentally friendly place to be. This year the committee have been meeting each Wednesday to review jobs, to participate in experiments and to share ideas on how to be water smart. | |
|
|
Our committee comprises of students from 1st class to 6th class along with teachers. Two students from each class have volunteered to do their part in helping to keep our school green! |

| As part of our action plan with an aim to conserve water, our school has 9 golden rules:
1. Don’t flush for fun!
2. Press it once!
3. Stop that drop!
4. Report and fix leaks!
5. Turn it off when brushing your teeth!
6. Fill it first!
7. Say no to the hose!
8. Have a shower instead of a bath!
9. Fill that basin!

The children have been fantastic at getting involved in poster campaigns displaying these golden rules and ways we can conserve water in our school and at home which are on display around the school. |
|
| The school aims to lessen its overall impact on the environment by educating our children on the importance of protecting our water. Over the past few months, the children have been working hard learning about the water cycle and its necessity for providing us with fresh water. The children have been experimenting with the process of water filtration and are actively seeing dirty water from rivers being cleaned and ready for us to use. Children in the senior end have been learning about water pollution and have engaged in experiments testing for the effects pollution has on our water. |

All taps in the school building have been replaced with push taps and hippo bags have been placed in toilets that use 9 litres with every flush. As a result of our water saving measures we save 123 litres of water in each classroom and 1,293 litres throughout the school ... each day! |
|
| Our school have adopted a new motto “Stop that Drop!” and the children and teachers are very busy being Leak Detectives around the school. We hope that all their work will be recognised with the achievement of our third flag! So help us and “Do your part, be water smart”!! |
