June 16th 2009

Dear Parents/ Guardians,

It is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of another school year. As you can imagine June is an extremely busy month. Below are a list of some of the activities ongoing in the school at present.

Summer Concerts - The summer concerts will take place on Wednesday the 24th and Thursday the 25th of June this year. The children from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes will perfonn songs from Grease, Mama Mia, Shrek and The School Of Rock. The shows give the children a great opportunity to practice and show off their singing, dancing and acting skills and it is amazing how some children really flourish in these areas of the arts curriculum. Tickets will be sold from Mrs. O'Connor's room Friday the 19th Monday the 22nd and Tuesday the 23rd. All proceeds will go to a charity chosen by the boys and girls from 6th class. Thanks to all the teachers for their hard work preparing the show and particularly to Ms. McCabe for co-ordinating the event.

Sport -Well done to all the boys and girls who competed in the Dublin Athletics Finals in Santry this year and to the teachers who prepared them for their events. Thanks also to Ms. O'Boyle and Ms. Talty for organising our Junior and Senior Sports Days which the children thoroughly enjoyed. It was wonderful to see the children using every nook and cranny of the school to take part in various sporting activities. Finally on the sports front we have to mention the Gymnastics team who have been working so hard with Ms. Talty and will put on an exhibition during the summer concert. Their talent is a sight to behold,

Junior Infant Visits-- Our new Junior Infant Classes are coming to visit the school this Wednesday and Thursday at 2.15. The children and parents will get a chance to visit their new classroom and meet their class teachers for next year. They will also have an opportunity to chat with members of the Parents Association.

Parents Association-- I would like to thank the Parents Association for all their hard work throughout the year. They really do a huge amount of unseen work on behalf of the children. I would also like to welcome the new members of the Parents Association committee on board and look forward to working closely with them in the coming year.

Reports-- We will be sending out the annual reports before the end of the school year. We would ask parents to give their child a stamped, addressed, enveiope so that the report can be posted in a timely fashion. The stamps alone will save the school 300 euro in postage.

Book Lists -- The book lists have been prepared. As you know the book rental scheme results in significant savings to families each year. Lists will be sent to families on Monday the 22nd of June and must be returned by Wednesday the 24th. Books will be ready for collection from the school computer room from the 19th to the 28th of August. A huge thanks is due to Catherine, Donna and Pearl for all their voluntary work in facilitating our parents in this way.

Cut Backs -- I have mentioned the impact of the government cutbacks on our school in several newsletters. One of the most significant impacts is that we will lose three teaching posts as a result of the cuts. This will result in some class amalgamations. As I mentioned at the Parents Association A.G.M. the three third classes will return as two fourth classes next year. These children were originally in two first classes and will be returned to those groups. The class lists ,viII be sent home in the coming weeks. If any parent wishes to discuss this please give Pearl a call and an appointment can be arranged.

Book Fair - We were delighted with the response to the Book Fair. The children purchased a large number of books at reasonable prices and the school received books to the value of 3,000 euro. Thanks very much to the members of the Parents Association for their support during the week and to Ms. Murtagh for co-ordinating the event.

Uniforms -- Any uniforms ordered through the Parents Association have now been distributed. Uniforms will be available from Pat O'Farrell Uniform Suppliers in the Airside stores during the month of August.

Artist in Residence-- The programme came to a conclusion during the week. The 5th class children worked on the theme -- Lusk, My Village, 2009 and the fruits of their labour can be seen in the school hall. It is a wonderful piece of work. Thanks to the class teachers, to Ms. Scott for co-ordinating the project and to artist Maura O'Rourke for her inspiration.

Interactive White Boards -- The Board has purchased four interactive white boards which will be installed over the summer and should add to our provision ofICT throughout the school.

6th Class -- We will soon be saying good bye to this year's 6th class. It will be a particularly sad time for us as they have been an extremely pleasant group of children who have been an excellent example to the younger children in the school. We would also like to say thank you to any parents whose youngest child is now leaving us. I can think of several families who will be very much missed not only because their last child will have moved on but also because their parents were so supportive of the school throughout their child's education here.

Regards,
