Reading Buddies
The 6th, 5th and 1st classes are participating in a reading buddies programme. This means that children in the older classes are helping the 1st classes with reading, using the paired reading technique. The programme enables the younger child to receive 15-20 minutes of undivided attention, support and encouragement from an older child every day for the duration of the project. Research has shown that paired reading significantly enhances the children’s reading ages and self-esteem, while promoting a much greater interest in, and enjoyment of reading. So far, the daily sessions are proving to be a great success, with children engaging enthusiastically in the programme. Thank you to Mrs. Murtagh and Ms. McNamee for organising the event.
