Reading Buddies
The 6th, 5th and 1st classes are participating in a two-week reading buddies programme again this year. Children in the older classes are paired with children in the 1st classes and become 'reading buddies'. The buddies read together for 20 minutes per day for the duration of the project. The younger child benefits from undivided attention, support and encouragement from an older child, while the older child gains confidence as a reader and tutor.
Research has shown that the programme significantly enhances the children’s reading ages and self-esteem, while promoting a much greater interest in, and enjoyment of reading. So far, the daily sessions are proving to be a great success again this year.
The programme will begin for the 2nd classes in the coming weeks. Thank you to Mrs. Murtagh for organising the event.
